Writing Tips (7)

I tried to search the other threads but I couldn't find something like this. I apologize if this is a repeat thread.

I've been considering writing a story and posting it here. Does anyone have any tips for guro writing in particular? And I don't just mean what fetishes to include, although people can feel free to give me ideas.

For instance, would it be better to write in third person or first person from the victim's view or what? How much description is appropriate without being excessive? Should I use a thesaurus to come up with a dozen different words for "cut"?

I do realize that a lot of this could vary from story of story, but haven't really found any helpful trends on /lit/. I'm not asking for absolutes or anything, but general guidelines would be great!

You did well. /dis/ is the best place for this and well, such threads don't show up very often, to be honest.

I haven't been writing anything in ages (and have never written anything guro), so I can only give a few personal pointers that seemed to work for me.

  • The POV is your own choice. It depends on your plot and how you want the average reader to feel it. Using first person + victim's view works nice for a SM-based guro story.
  • Don't rely on a thesaurus or synonymous word generator unless you really need it. You'll quickly depend on that and waste time and efficiency while writing your stories. You will gain new vocabulary as you are writing without even noticing it.
  • Long doesn't mean good. Any story is a potential hit. Depending on your style, you can either expand the story while you are writing (requires a lot of imagination and logic) or write some guidelines for yourself before you start. Try not make it too short, either.
  • Be creative ! A guro story is a story before it is guro. A story has to be original. The reader has to feel it, not read it out of boredom to kill time. Avoid clichés, word repeat, caps lock or seizure syndrome (keeping your finger stuck on a key to "emphasize" the effect - it will actually make the whole thing look retarded).
  • Fetishes : Don't force in sex if you don't want to, it won't make your story better and quite a bit of people actually like 'soft' guro stories. Still, if you want your story to have sex in it, use your own knowledge. Don't write a freak story if you don't feel good with it, for example. You need to master the topic. If you have a good knowledge of some kind of fetish, then start with it.
  • Comments ? Read them but don't let them influence you, be them positive or negative. Feedback is only to be considered if it is constructive. "EPIC WIN" or "You suck" are to be ignored, but then that's common sense. Constructive comments are the best gift writers should expect from a community, as they will allow you to get better.
  • Don't give up. Your first story is not going to be awesome unless you are gifted. Experiment and get better. Write often. Spot your weaknesses and fix them. This is not an online challenge, there is no number one at this - writing is subjective, people either like your style or they don't. But constantly improving your style will get you more readers. Don't get a high opinion of yourself if you get positive comments, it's easy to take the bait and end up getting flamed. Let a smile no one can see shine on your face, allow your ego to enjoy the moment if needed, and then advance to the next story.

I went overboard and gave pointers on regular writing as well but oh well. Like I said, that's just my opinion.

It's a thousand pages, give or take a few,
I'll be writing more in a week or two.
I can make it longer if you like the style,
I can change it round and I want to be a paperback writer,
Paperback writer.

I wrote a story a couple years ago about an unstable serial killer that went around strangling people with their own intestins..I wrote each chapter (it was about 4 chaps long) from the vics POV and then did a single page of the killers POV for each chapter. it worked out well for me so you could try something like that?

Whenever I write a guro story I generaly work out a rough plot before hand (generally an amalgamation of various fantasies I have), when it comes to the POV i generally write in the point of view of the dominant inflictor, this is mainly becasue it's based on my fantasy so it comes easiest to me, If a story focuses more on the girl (victim) and has more than one agressor i use third person simply becasuse writing from the victims point of view is difficult for me becasue i don't relate to the character, you should find whatever feels most comfortable for you, but don't be afraid to mix it up.
My last piece of advice is that if you want to make an erotic guro story you have to create mood, a good story will keep people reading for a long time if they get into it, i find a lot of stories start too slow and I just can't get into them, I generally start off with my agressor character fantasising about his victim intermitently through out opening up the story or whilst he's havng a normal conversation with her and I like to build up the darkness, I always strugle with the beginning trying to get the mood just so, it's another case of keep trying until you've written something you can escape into.

P.s. going over the top with the gore can be a bad idea but an exciting and original form of torture or mutilation can be what sets your story apart from others.

sorry for waffling and good luck in your writting endevours
