I'm just curious if anyone else knows how the term "Ryona" came about and what the meaning behind it is? I'm "so so" at reading Japanese and read some 2ch thread mentioning something about a word ("Ryo..something oranother") that means "seeking out the strange" (according to Rikaichan) and then Onanii meaning "Onaism/Masturbation".
Anyone with a better grasp on Japanese than me feel like they can shed some clearer light and information on this fairy new Japanese fetish term?

Ryouki (猟奇), which indeed means "seeking the bizarre".

The Japanese wiki doesn't help at all.
According to the hatena diaries, it's Internet slang for 'masturbating to bizarre', but not just guro. It includes games, anime, photoshopping, etc.
As far as i understood:
Ryo = abuse.
Ona = woman.
So its basically woman abuse.
I'm not sure about "Ryo", but "Ona" definitely means woman. I don't know if the words have a double meaning though.

It's onna (女 おんな/オンナ), not ona.
Ona is definitely short for Onanie (onanism, オナニー), so OP is right about that part.

I'd guess you don't have a very good grasp on Japanese in stating that "ona" = "woman"... the word for woman is "Onna" and yes... the second "n" in there does make a big difference.
You should really try to fact check for information before you believe in the hearsay of others. That's how stupid shit like people thinking the Japanese word for porn is "hentai" gets spread around!
