Basically, it was a large DDoS attack conducted by Raidchan against many of the major *chan sites out there.
We don't care about 4chan or other *chans so it went largely unnoticed by the people here.

I think "the majority of the posts" might be an exaggeration, though I agree that many of the posts are poor. (The Poser content is a pet peeve of mine. There's also the real gore in /g/.) It's the relatively extreme content that keeps us from being overrun.
The required "chemotherapy" is, in my opinion, to recruit enough moderators for them to be on 24/7, and perhaps a post reporting system.
