Fairy Hunt DS (116)

1 Name: angrybrain : 2008-04-09 00:43 [Del]

OK guys. I've got a project that I want to bring to life, but it's too big for me to go it alone. Fairy Hunt DS. I've gotten about half the background down on paper, and I've pounded out some of the code (hope to have an interactive central nervous system demo out around the end ofthe month). I know we're not much of a tightly knit community here, but I think this is relevant enough to ALL our interests (even you /f/) that we can do something with this.

core features :

  • hunting fairies. use weapons to kill, maim, and/or capture fairies.

-breeding/"care" - use your captured fairies to breed more! fairies are low maint creatures.

  • research table - dissect living or dead fairies. research their biology to develop better weapons. extract their organs for sale or to use in ammo/biowarefare recipies. (or just pin them to the table and have your way with them!)

-simulated central nervous system, brain, working internal organs (including reproductive organs).
-play on a DS Lite or on your PC with an emulator.

I'm going to need C++ programmers (no DS xp required), sprite/background/UI/character artists, female voice actors (and screamers!) and sfx people.

there's no website, and not likely to be one, sadly. if you can help out, or just want to encourage, you can contact me @hotmail.com , fairyhuntds(at). I also have msn IM set up for this hotmail account, and you can reach me at almost any time thanks to my kickass Palm Centro!

Ill post more details later, backstory, and anatomical details, here if there's demand for it.

Anxiously Awaiting Your Reply,
angrybrain

That was my only reason for upgrading. DX10, with a DX10 card, I can happily say, kicks all ass.

When I get some time (Ya right! ROFL) I'll set up a dual boot for XP and Vista. Until then, however...sigh

I actually have days off this weekend! 2 of 'em! So I'm looking forward to getting back to work on my oh-so-loverly fairies! =)

angrybrain, is there going to be rape and misogyny in it? if so i am interested in helping.

71 Name: angrybrain : 2008-06-29 00:46 [Del]

>>69

nod I've seen (and like) his stuff, and was sad when he said he wasn't doing it anymore. sigh such is life though. Fairies are such a lovely symbol from childhood, and such easy victims, that its a wonder there isn't tons more fairy guro than there is.

>>70
Rape, yes. Torture, (oh god) yes. Misogyny, not really. Fairies are female because I have a slightly bent sex drive - male guro just doesn't do anything for me. I love women, but when they're anime, or animated, I just prefer them gutted. :P

Help would be appreciated - I don't suppose you have a medical degree (doctorate? lol). If you'd like to help with coding or whatnot, my email is listed in more than a few of my posts :)

Sorry for the lack of updates recently guys+gals. Project is still in progress! Kind of. Still working on gas exchange, which is stubbornly refusing to work predictably. sigh the lung and blood classes are both a tattered mess. Probably time to rewrite from scratch, see if I've made any glaring error.

I'll (hopefully) have good news, soon. In a worst case scenario, I'll have a 'Ok, I'm going to cheat a little on this part and move on, and come back later' message lol.

Hey! I'm female! sudden eh-pif-an-nee
If you need voice actresses I can be of service.
I already have a program to record sound and my own mic.
Let me know if I could be of use.

Argh forgot to send an email, sorry.

Not quite at the point where I'm ready for voices just yet - However, the more voicing I can get, the better. I'll send emails out to everyone when I start getting to that point! =)

This sounds quite awesome. Also, I know you're asking for help, but sorry, my brain falls apart for some reason when it comes to OOP.

Is this still going to come out (eventually) for the Nintendo DS or is this going to be for the computer? I mean, I'm pretty sure it's going to be pretty hard to convince NIntendo to make a game like this on their DS...

And is that demo still up?

77 Name: Anonymous : 2008-07-08 01:19 [Del]

>>76
Talking to Nintendo about this at all would probably be a bad idea...
They don't have to know about it to make a game to the DS.

78 Name: angrybrain : 2008-07-08 11:01 [Del]

>>75

I have some expectations that it will, in fact, be quite awesome.

I'm not a strict OOPer. Basically, you'd be writing classes for the simple reason that I don't want to go handing my code out to every tom, dick, and fairy. A few interface calls isn't enough to derive my main source from, so it's pretty safe.

>>76

It DEFINATELY won't have a nintendo seal - You'll need something like the R4 card for the DS - which allows you to run homebrew like mine. It takes a MicroSD card, easy as ploppin the .NDS file onto the sd card, ploppin the SD card into the R4, ploppin the R4 into the DS, and havin some fun.

At this point, it might be 2 versions - a non-math intensive (and therefore less interactive) DS version (which only has 1 66mhz and 1 33mhz processor), and a PC version (which will probably never happen, because I'm not that up on DX programming T_T). The neural net code isn't the best, as I've said. Maybe optimization will make everything magically better, but I doubt it. As it is, between NN simulation and the body simulation, I may not have enough room to do anything else. We'll see though, as I'm still early (and still stuck on) the body sim.

As for the demo - err. lemme check. I haven't had reason to update the page (nothing really new just yet T_T) I haven't gotten any emails saying he's cut me off. Just checked, and yah, its still up! Just bear in mind this is still an early body-sim demo. Not everything works (interface wise), and not everything works correctly (changing some things, like inc/dec heartrate, causes the body sim to die, if I recall correctly).

>>77
Ahh but wouldn't it be nice if I had a development house, and could get nintendos $10000 software development kit. daydreams

Taking a short break ATM - Need to let everything sink in. When I come back to it (probably a few days) rewrite the problem classes. Wish me luck lol.

Got a few pics to post anyways - found mah drawin binder! Packed away at the bottom of one of my boxes. Only got one fairy-related pic right now - One of the weapons, a laser gun that burns through flesh and muscle, but leaves organs alone (Man MAGIC IS AWESOME!) No background for it, but oh well - check /kaki/ for it later!

Wouldn't poeple be able to run it on their computers via an emulator such as no$gba instead of using a physical DS?

I don't want to go handing my code out to every tom, dick, and fairy.

Why are you concerned with keeping some of your source secret? Think you might later recycle some of the code into another program?

82 Name: angrybrain : 2008-07-09 06:46 [Del]

>>79

Yeah, they could do that too. I'd like to do a PC version, though, which would render DS emulation kinda pointless ;)

>>80

Wrong -chan anon.

>>81

Certain that I will, actually. I try to reuse code as much as I can. Also trying to stop an endless parade of <noun> Hunt DS games before they start. One is enough, I think ;)

a PC version too?
oh steady my dear heart, is this a joke? because this whole time I thought I would have to buy a new DS since my old one got crunched under a chair.
pray tell this was not just a fantasy of yours?

85 Name: Anonymous : 2008-07-13 18:17 [Del]

>>84
You could use an emulator to play it on a computer if there was no PC version, anyway.

86 Name: angrybrain : 2008-07-13 21:07 [Del]

>>84

I'd like to do a PC version. The heart of my code is portable - so I wouldn't have to write everything from scratch...

...But. I've not done anything with DirectX before, and truth be told, the simple OpenGL style 3D of the DS will give me serious problems (expect this part of development to take the longest).

I'd like to do a PC version, but I don't know if i'll be able to pull it off. :(

I will give it a try though. I promise you that!

Sorry all - RL got a good toothhold on me for a bit.

On break ATM, but probably not for too much longer. Letting my mind digest and come up with a solution for the perfusion problem. I'm actually looking forward to getting back on this project!

Art help? Hell yeah! Right now (with no art help) I'm planning on using a Poser-wannabe (its free) to do the fairy animations, since my drawing style is fairly inconsistant (and slooow. and not terribly accurate lol).

That pic I posted to /kaki/ was a concept sketch I did a while before I even started this, nothing more. if you'd like to help with art I'd appreciate it! You'll find my contact email addresses in prior posts (maybe you already have...need to check my mailboxes lol).

That's about it. expect regular updates to resume in the next week or so!

Update time guys.

Work has resumed. \o/

Some classes are being stripped and rebuilt. (Blood, mainly, along with the Generic Organ functions).

Stay tuned, as I'm hoping I'll have another, slightly more functional AND interactive demo up in the next week or three.

Ero - I'll add you to the list of female voices, and I'll send you an email about the art ASAP lol.

103 Name: Anonymous : 2008-08-04 01:42 [Del]

question:
could you add at least ONE bitch fairy? that would be awesome to rip into.

104 Name: Anonymous : 2008-08-04 05:42 [Del]

Variety in fairy personality would be nice, because we cn get different reactions out of them (one squeamish one, one hardcore one, a masochist, and a bitchy little one); tickling, too, for those times you feel merciful enough not to pick the poor little fairy to pieces.

105 Name: angrybrain : 2008-08-10 22:46 [Del]

Alrighty guys, 'nother update!

Rewrites are going a little bit deeper than I had anticipated. Respiratory and cardiovascular systems are being heavily changed...maybe not enough to call it a rewrite, but close enough. The system of percentages I was using for values wasn't quite working as well as I could have hoped, so replacing it will be more-or-less human-norm values converted to framerate timescales instead of per-minute (60 frames per second, 3600 frames per minute, nominally). Some things will have to be estimated (O2 consumption of the organs in various states isn't something I've been able to find just yet) but thats OK.

Also had to add a class - Atmosphere. We'll see if the DS has enough processing power to keep this in - promises to add all sorts of interesting possibilities.

So the new class structure (if anyone is interested) looks kinda like this :

blood.h/.c : Small class describing the contents of blood at each major organ/muscle, and providing methods of removing from/adding to the contents of the bloodstream (mainly for the organs benefit).

bloodsys.h/.c : Another small class describing various stats on the circulatory system in general, and mapping blood flow through the body to each organ (arteries) and the return to the heart (veins).

genericorgan.h/.c : some statistics common to all organs, such as health, activity level, consumption and waste production stats, among other things (helper calculation functions are also stashed in here).

atmosphere.h/.c : small class containing stats about the air - pressure, contents, etc. Please bear in mind that right now, CO2 and O2 are the only thing the lung class is looking at - things like H20, C0, etc will have to be coded for individually!

heart.h/.c, lungs.h/.c, muscle.h/.c : Organ classes. have all the specific functions and data for each organ. Stomach, intestines, liver, and kidneys/bladder are here to, but only as a set of genericorgan definitions - they have no specific functions or data yet. except for the liver, they may very well remain as genericorgans, since I'm not expecting any fairy to ever survive long enough for, say, the kidneys to actually have any relevance.

brain.h/.c : basically just a genericorgan class - the neural network stuff hasn't yet been integrated into the body sim yet.

Almost all of these classes are still in the process of being rewritten or modified, so no new demo yet. I'll try to be as descriptive as possible in the stats display, but chances are good you'll still need to look up some things :(

This is planned for (god I need to head over to /lit/ and get the backstory put up on the fairies). Also, I'd like to have it so that you can play with a fairy, and put it back - you'll be able to 'train' fairies to associate different tools to different things, for instance, if you hurt them with, say, a scalpel they'll get scared if you pull out a scalpel, if instead you pleasure them with it, they'll get aroused instead. Probably not the most critical thing in the world, but it's at least a little interesting, and not too code/memory intensive :)

There will be 4 types of fairies, but there'll probably be a good bit of variety even within a type - it depends on how much of a random factor I put in when initializing a fairy. I don't know exactly how much personality each fairy type will have (they won't speak or anything) but they'll have different sensitivity to various stimuli, and they'll react differently.

And yes, as I've posted before, I plan to put plenty of non-lethal options (like tickling) in. :P

108 Name: Anonymous : 2008-08-11 00:43 [Del]

Oh my god. If this becomes I reality I will be in heaven. I thought the best thing that could happen is that guy finishing the "Let's Play With Fairies" comic. But no, this is like 2000 times better! Especially with the depth your going into! I seriously hope this project doesn't lose its drive guys.

Also, I hope you put some focus onto the psychological repercussions of messing with the fairies, like for example, if you left them limbless it'd be cool to see them looking completely crushed about their situation on the dissection table, like having the whole idea sink in or something like that. And of course, make it seem like they really fear you. You've gotta capture the emotion, some pleading while they're still alive would be cool too.

>>108

It all depends on how well I can get the lower levels of the AI optimized. The CNS/Body sims will have the ability to be tied into a higher level AI, but truth be told, for just fairies on a table, I don't think it will really be needed. Pretty much everything required (except memory) can be done inside the CNS. This is a good thing though - If they required a lot of high-level AI, i'd probably have to skimp a LOT in other places.

They will display a fear response when you first put them on the table (change of surroundings, lack of mobility). They'll keep it, if you do painful things to you, or they'll lose it if you do pleasant things to them. So it kind of depends on you.

Pleading won't happen - that'd be one of the things controlled by high-level AI, which they probably won't have much of. They will have an interesting variety (i hope - depends on how many neurons I can devote to vocalizations) of sounds, though. Surely one or two could be interpreted as somewhat pleading-ish :)

To play on the DS you'll need something that lets you use an SDmicro memory card. The one I use is called R4. any search for "R4 DS" should bring up a long list of sites that sell them.

Since you can put files on the card - yes. there will likely be dozens of versions as I get new stuff put in. just download the latest .NDS and overwrite the old one on the card and you're good to go.

there's no real versions yet tho, and probably not for a while yet.

>>112

Its alright. Encouragement helps too :P

114 Name: Anonymous : 2008-08-15 01:00 [Del]

no pleading is a GOOD thing, just leave it at the eyes+terrified rambling. Have you played those Studio S games? Holy shit, shut up bitches!
Anyway I've herd of martial arts techniques that 'attack' specific organs, so you can probably do that to something as tiny as fairies with a reflex hammer or something.
And...
Just as a totally awesome bonus/easter egg...
I think you should add some '34' 'skins' that can be chosen to be placed over existing fairies. For example a Pfil skin or a Cutie (Astayanax) skin, or the fairy from Legend, or any other famous fairies you can think of.
http://rule35.paheal.net/rule35/src/121504134110.gif
example if you passed that game by.
Or at the very least extra costumes. Which you can choose not to repair if you'd like to have a lasting memento of each session.

115 Name: angrybrain : 2008-08-15 05:43 [Del]

>>114

rofl. yah. I got bored with the studio S stuff pretty fast though. Hopefully this'll have just a wee bit more replay value ;)

nod reflex hammer. Pin. Scalpel. Well, once you know where the organs are, anyways. No x-ray vision, and nothing like trauma center where you're guided. You'll just have to cut her open and poke around first ;)

I'll be running very short on both backgrounds and sprites, so I doubt there will be anything beyond skin-tone and hair color. Clothing - No. I disagree with fairies wearing anything. In other fantasy worlds, it might be acceptable, but damnit, not in mine.

Fairies are plentiful, no need for mementos - just grab another fairy (although, I'd really like to get a 'Snapshot' kind of thing in. Get a nice big SDMicro memory card lol). In fact, if I do make the full on Fairy Hunt game, instead of just the fairy-torture-table, the reason you're doing anything with fairies is because there are too many - hundreds of thousands of fairies need to go. You happen to be in the right place at the right time, and get picked as one of the people given a Fairy Hunting License (yay for you!!).

Easter eggs get added after development is done. Since I plan on subjecting fairies to hideously painful torture for at least a year after I'm done, I doubt I'll have time for such activities! And,right after THAT, I'll probably be in jail for a very long time, or on the run, since I doubt Uncle Sam or the american public will be as appreciative of my efforts as gurochan LOL.

116 Name: angrybrain : 2008-08-24 00:47 [Del]

Yay! It's update time again! Little later than usual, but, I'm a busy guy.

Respiratory system is sorted out, and I've finally gotten some nice, human-normal values for O2 consumption for every major organ (screw you guesstimation! HAHA!). I'm sorting out the circulatory system right now (should present some interesting possibilities - Like re-routing arteries!). Then tie everything together and make sure it works, then there'll be a new demo out - I'll try to remember to put some interesting ... 'tools' in so you can break different parts of the body to see how it reacts...and do it in a way pretty much everyone can understand. ;)

I do have a few unresolved concerns at this point - namely ensuring children don't have access to this (Don't get me wrong - because I don't want angry parents murdering me, or setting my house on fire, or filing lawsuits against me, or getting me arrested, etc). It may not be a huge issue, but it's enough to make me think I need to do something...I just dunno what at this point. All of my ideas so far aren't likely to be acceptable to the gurochan community. If anyone has any ideas on how I can verify age (at least), yet still allow gurochan members to remain anonymous, I'm all ears. Tying a unique ID to each rom, and each ID to an actual person would be ideal for me - should angry parents try to sue, I'd be able to point them in the direction of the idiot who put the rom up on a torrent or whatever. I don't see this actually ever happening though (again, I'm all ears if anyone has a good solution). Well, we're not quite to the point where I need to worry about this just yet, just wanted to give ya'll a heads up.

Ero seems to have dropped off the face of the earth so we're back to Daz3D as the fairy-generating method. Unless any artists are willing to tackle a fairly large (but very rewarding) animation project.

Voices - Haven't forgotten about you gals, but we're still a long way off. I'll get the stuff you need to you when we get there!

That's all I got for right now. Hopefully (but maybe not) my next update will include the new demo. We'll see though.
