"Goth" is an abbreviated form of the word "Gothic", which refers to an artistic an architectural style that characterized 15th and early 16th century Italy, and spread throughout Europe. Gothic architecture survives today primarily in the great Cathedrals of Europe.

The Gothic period was the first time that the flying buttress and pointed arch were used in stone architecture outside the Middle East, which allowed the walls to be thinner, and led to the development of huge cathedrals with massive stained-glass windows. The big round stained-glass window in some churches is called a "Rose Window" and was among the first gothic innovations. Some monk came up with it. Duncan? I don't remember.

Later gothic architecture became retardedly complex and expensive and decadent, and was eventually referred to as "Flambant" or "Flamboyant" because the many spires and carved decorations made the buildings look like petrified flame. The short answer is that "Goth" is a word for the subculture of teenagers that wear too much black makeup, read Anne Rice novels and then lay around thinking about how wonderful death must be. It's just a semi-harmless outlet for generic teenage angst, and it sells Niel Gaiman's comic books, so I guess it's okay.

But I don't want to have to look at them every time I walk through the park at night, wearing their low-quality, overprices ripped black pants they got at Hot Topic with all the safety pins in them, and rolling up their sleeves to show that little skull tattoo that they'll be ashamed of in five years, and continue to be ashamed of for the rest of their lives. I don't want to read their whiny poetry graffiti'd on the post office wall or have their undermaintained, self-agrandizing blogs pop up every time I go online.

I want them to take that journey into their soul. I really do. I think it'll improve them in the long run to have a little introspection in their lives. But any time they want to stop writing me postcards about it in the form of a lousy haiku they carved into a park bench is just fine with me.
