Also, contrary to popular belief, research animals can and do live in such a fashion for a fairly significant period of time. A practiced veterinary surgeon (or even just am experienced technician) can implant and explant all sorts of sensing devices and keep the specimen alive. Usually, the reason a research animal is killed is because the study is over. Regulations require transgenic animals be sacrificed at the end of any research protocol so that they do not enter into the common breeding pool.
Animals used in implant research and vivisection (which literally means to "cut while alive" and includes surgeries where the specimen remains alive) are usually put down for quality of life issues resulting from the implants not working right or the conditions induced to mimic human disease, not the procedures themselves. The conditions you are interested in count as a reduction of independence and, therefore, quality of life, which is why animals are not kept that way for extended studies. For example, there are training courses in animal surgery which deal with this kind of thing (advantages of being a biologist, I suppose). The courses is teach survival surgery techniques (which is the official term for vivisection experiments where the specimen is kept alive afterwards) but after training procedures the animals are usually sacrificed anyways due to lack of room and the inability to use an animal for two different experiments because it violates the controls (unknown factors from the first experiment might affect the results of a second). But, in theory, experiments can be performed indefinitely with the same sort of limits you'd see in allowing to heal from surgical procedures.
If a person doesn't mind that loss of independence (most I've encountered do, not unlike long term illness without the illness), you could theoretically prolong that state almost as long as you wish, barring complications from anesthesia or infection. One could probably also continue exploring carefully and slowly to probe your limits over a good, long period of time with the right equipment.
